Search Engine Optimised Text (SEO)
At Nelson Martins Design - Website Design Melbourne, we have observed some rather unique patterns among website users. 1) People don't read word-for-word onscreen. About 80% of all internet users perform what is known as 'scanning'.
With this said... How do we combat the issue of having Search Engine Optimised Text if people don't read (Search engine optimised text just means that it has been created to be 'keyword rich' about a specific topic).

Well, here at our Website Design Studio in Melbourne, we have reversed the weights of importance (in terms of heirachy) to address this problem. We concentrate our efforts to;
- 1) Search Engines as our number one focus point, and
- 2) Using 'user readibility' as our secondary focus.
Although this may sound rather counter intuitive, though having too much information on a website (or webpage) will NOT make users leave your website. If anything, by supplying too much information to swallow at once (like we are doing here), it gives users the stronger reason to 'bookmark' your page (or website) for later reference - and it WILL encourage them to return at a later date.
So, although our method of reversing the order of heirachy goes against what 'leading' professionals are advising - I have yet to find any example where someone has left a website because there was simply too much relevant information there.
Here are some interesting statistics...
Did you know that a standard web surfer who is 'browsing' or builing their knowledge about a particlular subject or topic will return to your website 7 times - before they are ready to buy from you. This is an interesting dynamic because if you follow what other website designers or copywritters are saying about 'what type' and 'how much' content you should be providing on your website. You are supplying your entire website in one sitting. ...With that said, what would entice them to come back? Would they return simply to waste their own time on order to re-reading everything again - or would you return to try and make sense of everything (and come back for a bigger 'bite') - given that they couldn't mentally process all your wonderful information in one hit?
'Website Content', and HOW Search Engines will ultimately rank you...
Search engines provide the service of relaying the 'most relevant' information - based on what you typed in the search querie box. This means that if you designed your website for 'users' or people - when you probably didnt include more than a couple of paragraphs about whatever your discussing / selling / promoting (let's say it's sparkplugs). Now, that's for your website. Whereas, on the other hand your competitor included the equivalence of a small book about the same topic as you (sparkplugs).
- Who does Google 'think' has more knowledge about that particular
subject (or topic)?
- Who is Google going to give the higher ranking to?
On the flip-side, your website users (who just happens to be looking for information on sparkplugs),
which website is he (or she) more likely to bookmark and return to the page at a later date? Yours or the competitor?
Therefore, we strongly stand our ground on the arguement that website text needs to be designed for;
a) Search Engines First, and b) People Second. This means having 'keyword rich' text about your product or service with what may be questionably too much information (which is never is - providing that its usefull, reads well and is related to the topic at hand. We have proven this process to work FAR better than a single paragraph here and there on countless occasions and are yet to have someone prove this theory (and practice) to be unproductive and repulsive to website users. So, ignor what the other 'professionals' are saying (IF it contradicts what we've just explained).
